While over the past decade a number of scholars have done significant work on questions of black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered identities, this volume is the first to collect this groundbreaking work and make black queer studies visible as a developing field of study in the United States. Bringing together essays by established and emergent scholars, this collection assesses the strengths and weaknesses of prior work on race and sexuality and highlights the theoretical and political issues at stake in the nascent field of black queer studies. Including work by scholars based in English, film studies, black studies, sociology, history, political science, legal studies, cultural studies, and performance studies, the volume showcases the broadly interdisciplinary nature of the black queer studies project.
Generally speaking, an interview is a method of questioning. Apart from journalism where the interview is an important tool for investigation as well as presentation of information, various forms of interview techniques are applied in science where interviews are traditionally used to collect data and to address particular research questions. Furthermore, interviews are steadily gaining popularity as a method of artistic expression and research.
The workshop gives an overview of the different uses of interview techniques and designs, depending on the particular contexts. The focus will be on the possible uses of the interview format within the art research context. Besides the theoretical overview, there will be practical/technical training along with presentations of examples. The participants are asked to bring along their own interviews or prepare relevant material that can be discussed and further developed within the workshop.

¿Qué es hacer una crítica? Apostaría a que se trata de algo que la mayoría entendemos en un sentido ordinario. El asunto, no obstante, se complica si intentamos distinguir entre una crítica de tal o cual posición y la crítica como una práctica más general que pudiera ser descrita sin referencia a sus objetos concretos. ¿Podemos además interrogarnos sobre su carácter general sin insinuar una esencia de la crítica? Y si para establecer esta imagen general lo hiciéramos expresando algo que se aproximase a una filosofía de la crítica, ¿perderíamos entonces la distinción entre filosofía y crítica que forma parte de la definición misma de la crítica? La crítica es siempre crítica de alguna práctica, discurso, episteme o institución instituidos, y pierde su carácter en el momento en que se abstrae de esta forma de operar y se la aísla como una práctica puramente generalizable. Pero, aun siendo esto cierto, no significa que sea imposible algún tipo de generalización o que tengamos que enfangarnos en particularismos. Todo lo contrario, aquí transitamos en un área de obligada generalización que aborda lo filosófico pero que debe, si queremos que sea siempre crítica, guardar distancia frente a sus propios resultados.
De las múltiples tramas de los conceptos de resistencia se desprende no pocas veces una impresión de falta de claridad, así como una arbitrariedad que afectan a la distinción útil de estos conceptos. Por ejemplo, cuando, en su conferencia sobre la gubernamentalidad, Michel Foucault repasa y sopesa toda una batería de conceptos de resistencia –negativa, revuelta, desobediencia, insubordinación, deserción, disidencia, disenso y, por último, contraconductas– se plantea ante todo la siguiente pregunta relativa a la crítica: ¿hay en esas tramas conceptuales un lugar específico de la crítica y, de haberlo, cuál es? Categories of criticality have evolved over time, but their taxonomic history is short. The naming process is itself frequently a method of recuperation, importing expressions of critique into the system being criticized, freezing into academic formulas things that were put together off the cuff. In considering the long history of artistic production in human societies, the question of “political” or “critical” art seems almost bizarre; how shall we characterize the ancient Greek plays, for example? Why did Plato wish to ban music and poetry from his Republic? What was to be understood from English nursery rhymes, which we now see as benign jingles? A strange look in the eye of a character in a Renaissance scene? A portrait of a duke with a vacant expression? A popular print with a caricature of the king? The buzz around works of art is surely less now than when art was not competing with other forms of representation and with a wide array of public narratives; calling some art “political” reveals the role of particular forms of thematic enunciation.1 Art, we may now hear, is meant to speak past particular understandings or narratives, and all the more so across national borders or creedal lines…

Su planteamiento de partida arranca de la afirmación de que es necesario dejar de considerar la actividad artística y cultural como una excepción en el ámbito de las relaciones sociales y de producción, para poder pensar las formas de acción que desde el campo de la producción cultural apuesten por una reorganización crítica del trabajo y de la producción de los bienes comunes.
